The history of this place goes back to 1822 when the decision was made to dig the first well, called "puits des Anglais", to make up for the lack of drinking water. Fresh water from the slopes of the volcano was to be collected to ensure that the people of Saint-Philippe had access to water.
According to legend, the origin of the name "puits des Anglais" is linked to the presence of a treasure deposited by the English during the construction of the well. The island was indeed under English occupation at the time.
Today, the resources of the rural village of Le Baril are mainly agriculture, sugar cane, market gardening and vanilla.
